Are Apples Bad for Dogs

By Jerry Welsh

A loving dog owner would share whatever food is eaten with the pet. A responsible owner would make sure that the human food is safe before giving it to the pet. Apples are perfectly safe for humans but can the fruit poison the dog? Can the dog derive the same benefits humans get from eating apples?

Apples are favorite treats of dogs. The phytonutrients these juicy fruits contain can prevent the occurrence of some types of cancer. Dogs that love these juicy and crunchy fruits will gain the all important dietary fiber and vitamins A and C. One of the common ailments of dogs is hip dysplasia and the vitamin C found in apples can help in the prevention of this disease. Apples are good sources of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. The inclusion of this fruit in the dog's diet would not only prevent some kind of illness but also promote the good condition of the coat as well as prevent the occurrence of skin allergies.

An apple a day will keep the vet away. Fruits are health foods not only for humans but for dogs as well. However, some dog owners have warned other pet parents that apples can poison the dog. Dogs are well loved pets thus it is only natural for pet parents to be concerned with foods that can harm the pet. Would you or would you not consider including apples to the dog's diet?

If I were you I would give the pet apples but - in moderation. Dogs can eat apples but not the seeds. The seed is what makes this fruit dangerous to dogs because it contains amygdlin, a form of cyanide that is poisonous to dogs . This substance is highly dangerous to dogs as it hampers the blood's function of carrying oxygen to all parts of the body. Regular consumption of small amounts of this substance can damage the lining of the dog's intestines.

We know dogs to be voracious eaters and eating large amounts of this fruit can cause diarrhea. Apples contain naturally occurring sugar. This sugar form is not similar to the processed sugar contained by some dog treats that can cause obesity. However, this natural sugar can also cause obesity of the dog consumes large amounts of apples.

Dogs would get loads of healthful benefits from this crunchy sweet fruit but owners have to ensure that the apples are cored and that the dog would not be given free access to the fruit so that it would not overeat.
