Children And Adults Enjoy Alaska Havanese Puppies

By Nelda Rich

Families with children and single adults find Alaska Havanese puppies to be fun loving and rascally pets. They have certain health concerns to watch for just like any breed, but routine care at home and the veterinarian results in loving longevity.

Similar to others in the Bichon family, this animal has a short snout, ears set high, and wide-set eyes that are black outlined. They weigh no more than fourteen pounds, grow to eleven inches at the shoulder, and have a life span of fifteen years. They can be a single color or a mix of white, cream, gold, brown, beige, gold, silver, or black.

These affectionate pups give and receive love equally, and they want inclusion in all family events. Their smart, inquiring minds make them a fun playmate who learns commands and tricks easily. They are energetic and agile thanks to their well-formed bodies, and owners need to allow plenty of room to romp and burn energy.

They are double coated with soft, flowing hair that is curly and dense. Instead of falling off, dead hair is caught in the coat. Daily combing and brushing removes this hair, smooths out tangles, and evenly distributes the skin's oils. A professional groomer should also attend to the animal numerous times of the year.

Damaging heat and the sunlight is blocked from their eyes by their long, overhanging hair which should not be cut or pinned up. Monthly baths should occur as well as cleaning ears to keep away mites and bacterial infections. The skin below their eyes is stained brown from tearing, and dry skin can be remedied by combing oil through the hair.

Cataracts can turn into blindness if not removed in a timely manner. Maturing dogs can gradually become deaf, or pups may be born with some or complete deafness. They can also suffer from heart murmurs requiring medicine or surgery, liver and heart defects, seizures, thyroid production problems, and kidney failure due to underdevelopment. The latter could also lead to demise.

Imperfect cartilage or chondrosysplasia happens when bone growth plates stop growing too soon. Dwarfism with short legs or bowed legs needing straightened by surgery is the result. Kneecaps popping in and out of place is known as luxating patellas and also requires surgery. Inadequate blood flow to the hip joint causes Legg-Calve-Perthes. Some have experienced ill effects from anesthetics and doses that may be normal for other dogs during medical treatment.

People looking for playful, sociable, loyal dogs should consider Alaska Havanese puppies. Those suffering from allergies benefit from their hypoallergenic coat. Routine grooming and veterinary care catches any health issues so prompt attention can be administered. This ensures a long, happy life with their human family.
