The Sleeping Pattern of Dogs

By Jerry Welsh

What would you do if you if you are in a temperature controlled room, have a comfortable bed and have nothing to do? Sleep!. In similar circumstances, the dog would do a lot of sleeping too. Dogs are not only voracious eaters, they are great sleepers as well. A dog would commonly sleep more than half the day away! This has resulted to the notion that dogs are lazy animals.

Actually, dogs are very energetic. Dog owners are aware that the pet has to have opportunities to exercise otherwise, they will be bored and develop destructive habits. Dogs like humans would derive benefits from sleeping. Dogs though have the habit of closing the eyes and sleeping whenever there is an opportunity to do so.

General health condition, personality and the level of activity largely influence the dog's sleeping pattern. Dog are active animals with high exercise requirements but the St Bernard and the Newfoundland are breeds known to be rather slow moving. These breeds have the inclination to sleep for hours in front of the fire thus they are often called mat or rug dogs. These mat dogs would sleep for 16 to 18 hours every day.

Working breeds are different as these dog will be seen up and about doing their work. Dogs that herd and protect livestock would not be seen sleeping the day away as these animals have to be alert, to constantly patrol in order to save the livestock from predators. The same thing is true with dogs utilized by the law enforcers to sniff narcotics and bombs. All around farm dogs would not be seen sleeping the day away because of the work they need to perform.

It would not be surprising for dogs that live in apartments to have more time to sleep given the fact that they would have limited opportunities to be active outdoors unlike dogs that are allowed to roam and play outdoors. Most pet dogs are provided by the owners all imaginable comforts. Aside from having a softly padded bed, these dogs would be living in temperature controlled homes. These conditions would entice the dog to sleep most of the day. These dogs may appear to be sleeping all day but at the slightest sound, these dogs would wake up easily. When a sound is heard the dog will wake up and be alert instantly. Dogs may sleep a lot but the heightened senses enables these four legged friends to be awake in an instant thus they can be depended to protect the human family.
