Is an Affenpinscher Dog for You

By Jerry Welsh

The Affenpinscher, a dog breed that originated from Germany is also called Diablotin Mustacho and Monkey Dog. The Affenpinscher is a member of the pinscher-schnauzer group but because it has the size and the nature of terriers, it is often mistaken as one. During its early existence, an Affenpinscher is commonly housed in barns, granaries and stables to keep these areas rodent-free.

Affenpinscher these days live in a very different manner. From the rustic existence, these small dogs are now comfortably ensconced in the homes of doting pet owners. Affenpinscher is one of the breeds kept as lap dogs. This little dog makes an ideal pet for anyone that wants to have a lively, inquisitive and entertaining pet. Because of the dog's high level of intelligence, teaching the pet tricks would be a breeze. Monkey dogs thrive in the attention showered by the human family thus have the inclination to showoff. They would tirelessly entertain any one with its tricks of walking and dancing on its hind legs or tossing and catching balls.

A fully grown Affenpinscher measures 15 inches at the withers. This small dog though is big on personality. The dog often gets in tight spots because of its spunky personality. The dog would not back down from fighting much larger dogs especially if it knows that the family is being threatened.

An Affenpinscher is an ideal choice for a pet for an apartment dweller. The limited space of apartments would be sufficient to meet the exercise requirements of this dog. Affenpinschers are not excessive barkers and would only be heard barking when its owners are threatened. These small dogs would not need an extensive grooming routine. The good condition of the coat can be maintained with once a week brushing. An Affenpinscher is a fairly healthy breed with no known genetic defects.

This breed that has the looks of a monkey is not for everyone. The dog would be an ideal pet of a person that knows how to handle dogs properly. Loyal, Affectionate and protective are the good characteristics of the dog but it also has the tendency to be domineering. The Affenpinscher, like most breeds of small dogs, is renowned for its stubborn personality. This dog would be an ideal pet to an owner that had the ability to control the dog's stubborn personality. Otherwise, instead of owning the dog, the dog will own the master.
