Why Dog Training Can Create Pack Leader Status

By Adriana Noton

Many pet owners often underestimate the necessity and importance of effective dog training when it comes to elements of obedience. Such methods provide pets with the foundation for desired future behavior for a confident and well-adjusted canine. It is the responsibility of the owner to implement the necessary tools in order to maintain a happy and adjusted pet.

Often, owners who are unable to control the unwanted behavior which has developed as a result of a lack of boundaries, end up abandoned or in shelters. Undesirable behavior such as excessive barking, digging, jumping up and even aggression may become out of control and unmanageable. Dogs live according to a pack mentality in which the owner should always represent the pack leader through effective dog training and obedience.

There are many advantages to teaching your canine companion obedience, including a more confident and self-assured pet with an awareness of what is expected in terms of behavior. Dogs are taught to respond to your commands which makes it easier to control in a given situation to prevent threat or harm to other dogs or individuals. Techniques provide pooches with essential mental stimulation which contributes to a satisfied and well-adjusted pet.

When pets are not provided with sufficient guidance, it can result in potential danger to other pets and people while out on a walk in cases of increased aggression. The pooch will not respond to your commands and the experience of undesirable behavior may become frustrating for owners. Behaviors which are not effectively managed and controlled will escalate to the point of becoming unmanageable.

Once you have decided upon specific rules and boundaries for the home, implementing these strategies will create your status as the pack leader. In order to shape behavior, be sure to correct the pet while engaging in undesirable activities with a loud and firm, no or stop. This will startle the canine and through the process of conditioning and punishment which includes learning through association, pets will understand that engaging in specific behavior elicits a negative response from the owner.

Punishment may further include the use of pet corrective products which are designed to emit a loud noise each time the animal engages in an activity which is not desired. Always positively reinforce behavior when teaching your pooch to sit, stay, heel and paw. This involves praising or providing a suitable treat each time the requested activity is performed.

Proceed to train your canine with the basic sit, stay and paw by reinforcing the desired response with praise and suitable treats. Every session should remain short and stimulating so that maximum learning is achieved. This is to prevent the occurrence of your pet becoming bored and losing interest with having to learn specific commands.

The role of dog training is considerably important as it prevents dogs from developing the unwanted behaviors. Incorporate learning with regular exercise and play sessions for increased stimulation as often, the undesirable activity is a result of a lack of sufficient exercise and stimulation. Remaining in control and setting boundaries will ensure a well-adjusted pet able to easily integrate into the family way of life.
