The Basic Characteristics Of Hoof Boots

By Thelma Kent

Hoof boots are the device used to cover the hooves of a horse. These may be made using plastic or rubber. They may serve as an add on or alternative to horseshoes.

Usually these structures serve as a mechanism for protection, specifically when the horse has an injury. They can protect the sole and keep certain medications in place. Various designs available, but all of them serve the same purpose of protecting the wall and sole from difficult terrain, including hard surfaces and rocks.

These devices may be used as a alternative to horseshoes. This is particularly true in cases were there are thrown shoes and farriers are not available. They may also be necessary when a barefoot animal needs temporary protection because the condition are unfit for unshod hooves. Typically these are worn with endurance and trail riding and although police horses work on pavement, they wear these.

If a horse is transitioning between shod and unshod riding, these may be worn. During rides, as back up for horses that throw their shoes, these devices are usually on hand. In the field of veterinary medicine, these are often utilized.

An animal with a bruised sole or puncture wound may need one of these units to cover the area and offer protection. It may also keep the area clean and poultice, or other medications, in contact with the injured area. There are some horses who are unable to wear horseshoes. In these situations, boots may be another option. Furthermore, horses suffering with laminitis may wear these devices during their recovery.

hoof boots must not be worn on all the time, but instead, used when needed and removed when not. There are some horses that have these devices taken off every day. Others may keep there;s on for a few days without causing damage. Make sure that the units are adjusted properly on the horse and there is no rubbing or slippage.
