How To Work With Hoof Boots

By Laura Gallagher

Hoof boots are devices that are primarily made up of either plastics or rubber and they are designed in a way that they cover the hooves of a horse. Most are usually used as an alternative for the horse shoes. They offer protection to the horse and sometimes can be used to offer medication to the animal.

These equipments are designed differently but they have a major purpose that is to guard the horse from injury. For animals that have some wounds on the sole, one can use this to cover them so as to avoid further damages. One should ensure that the shoes are taken off before the animal goes to rest.

Several kinds of these equipments do exist and they are used to give protection on different joints. Brushes are used to cover the lower legs of the horse and by so doing they protect them from injuries. The only thing to ensure when using them is to have them fixed on the right position to avoid bruises.

Another commonly used group is the over reach which is designed to offer protection to the pastern. It is supposed to be tied on the front legs so as they cannot be hit badly by the hind ones. Fetlock rings give the same benefits as the brushes but the only difference is that they tend to cost less.

Tendons are supposed to be worn on the fore limbs to avoid damages on them caused by striking by the hind limbs. We also have the knee type which offers protection to the knee suppose the mule falls. One should ensure that they must tie stiffly so that they can never slip off while the horse walks.

One should make sure that the entire hoof boots are washed clean immediately some are used and store in a good place. Any failure to do this wills lower the life span of the gadgets by a great percentage. One must make sure that he only buys shoes that fit their animals. Remove stones and dirt soil from the tool.
