German Shepherd Training: Obedience Commands To Train Your Pet Dog

By Patrick Hayes

Training is a vital part of dog ownership that must be given enough attention. It should not be ignored since it is through training that a dog finds out how to act in ways regarded desirable by his owners. There are several tricks, lessons and commands a dog should learn during German Shepherd training. If you are wondering what these commands are and how to get your canine companion to master them, here are some tips you may want to take into consideration.

Teach your dog the "down" command. This command is useful to build upon, or on its own in emergency circumstances. A dog that responds well to "down" command can lower to the ground at a moment's notice in a testy scenario, making it a fantastic command to keep readily available for safety's sake. To teach your four-legged friend the command, have him in sit position and hold a treat right in front of his nose. When his attention is centered on you, slowly lower your hand (the one holding the treat) as you move it in your direction. Obviously, your canine friend will follow your hand in an attempt to have the treat. Give the command "down" as soon as his stomach hits the ground. Reward him with the treat for a job well done.

One more obedience command to train your pet during German Shepherd training is "drop it". You never know when that command will come in handy. Be generous with praise and treats while you are teaching this command and continue to practice it every now and then even after your dog has perfected it. A word to the dog sure beats having to wrestle unsavory objects out of a dog's mouth.

Teach your puppy the "Leave it!" command. This command is extremely important in day-to-day situations. Use it if your dog attempts to snatch food off a table or eat rabbit poop when you are out for a walk. To get the dog to abide by your command, hold a treat in your hand (have one in the other hand, also). Hold your hand open, and when he goes for the treat, close your hand as you say the command "Leave it!" Then offer him the other treat and discard the one you told him to leave. Repeat this step a few times and he'll learn to "Leave it!" when you tell him to.

German Shepherd training may appear complicated but as long as you have patience, diligence and can bear repetition, for sure it is not impossible to be successful.
