How CAD CAM Dentistry Operates

By Tommie Newman

Digital dentistry had always been known as a field that makes use of equipments which are computer-controlled. The field involves imaging and design which are computer-aided. Its main purpose is the provision of fabricated dental restorations. There has a been a surge of new methods in the field along the years. CAD CAM dentistry is one example.

Cad cam means Computer-aided Design and Computer-aided Manufacturing. It is a technique that uses designs which are computer-generated for the production of restorations as crowns or bridges. Other types of restoration include inlays and onlays, veneers and dental implants.

A dentist that uses the technique will take an image of the tooth and will send it to a computer equipped with a specific program. The computer will be making use of the image for the creation of a restoration image fitting the tooth of a patient. The restoration photo will then be sent to an equipment that will carve restoration from the materials composite resin and porcelain.

Patients have the freedom to opt for a colored restoration. This allows the colors of the fabricated material to match the natural color of teeth. An advantage that patients may enjoy from this aspect is that the equipments may be used while in the premises and the repair can be done on the same day.

Digital techniques are often preferred by most patients. This is because the more traditional methods are often carried out off-sites. They oftentimes require the patients to consult again weeks after and may even be asked for more additional visits.

Dental radiography is another imaging technique that uses x-rays in producing images. It involves the replacement of photographic films with equipments that capture images. The images will be stored as computer files, allowing faster production and enhancement techniques for improvements.

Patients should ensure that they consult the proper dentists to have the methods carried out. cad cam dentistry and other imaging techniques are fairly complicated processes. To achieve the best results, trained professionals should be sought for.
