Your Dog Can Get Allergies Too

By Jennifer Gretson

More often than not, our pets can experience some of the same problems that we do. One such example is that dogs can also suffer from allergies. Fortunately, there are numerous ways for dog allergies treatment so it is more of a matter of finding out exactly what the cause for the allergic reaction is.

Like in people, a specific substance that the dog's immune system recognizes as dangerous can result in the dog showing allergic symptoms. A lot of these substances are found everywhere and most times have no negative effects on dogs. Unfortunately, in dogs with allergies these substances have a negative reaction whenever the dog inhales, ingests or comes into contact with it. The effect that the substance has on the dog depends on the allergen itself.

There are many things that a dog can have an allergic reaction to but a few examples are pollen, fleas, mold spores, dust, cleaning products, insecticidal shampoos, certain food ingredients, as well as many others.

Some specific dog breeds such as terriers, setters, retrievers and flat-faced breeds are more prone to develop allergies. Despite this, any dog can develop allergies at any point of their lives.

Some of the symptoms that may be identified to help determine if your dog has allergies are itchy skin (which will result in excessive scratching), runny eyes, sneezing, vomiting, and diarrhea. Consulting a veterinarian is recommended if the dog presents any of these symptoms. The veterinarian will more accurately determine the cause of the allergies so the dog owner can make the necessary changes to stop the allergies.

The type of treatment to cure the dog of its allergies is special to the allergen that is causing the reactions. Fleas are a common source for allergies and can be treated with flea control programs and products. Environmental allergens such as pollen can be removed by bathing the dog once a week. Bathing the dog also helps to soothe the itching sensation in the skin. The wrong type of shampoo can sometimes make the problem worse so it is recommended to consult a veterinarian on what the best product is. Dust is another common source for allergies which can be taken care of by cleaning the area where the dog sleeps and vacuuming areas of the house where dust gathers. Food allergies in dogs require the most complex form of treatment. A special diet is required so the dog can heal until the allergic reactions have stopped. The dogs are then reintroduced to its old foods to see which was responsible for the allergic reactions.

Different methods of allergy treatments are allergy medications, injections and supplements that improve the dog's immune system to avoid allergies or help treat them. These methods of treatment should only be given when indicated by a veterinarian.

The most important step for effective treatment is finding out what is causing the allergic reactions to the dog. This should be done in conjunction with a veterinarian so the best dog allergies treatment can be advised.
