Discover the Best Way to Crate Training a Puppy

By Geraldine Dimarco

What is crate training? Crate training is when you train the dog to go to a certain spot for a period of time. A lot of people have thought that this is not an acceptable practice because a crate seems such a confined place to place an animal in. Studies have shown though that this is not only an effective tool in training-it is also a very kind way of treating dogs.

Before there were households that welcomed dogs as pets, they were in the wild. They survived by finding caves and other nooks that served as their shelter from all the danger out there. This is what crates are to them. It is their safe place that they can go to when they are stressed and need peace and quiet.

So now we understand that crates are not a punishment for noncompliant canines-it will be good to find out how to crate train our pets. As with all training, it's always best if you can start them at an earlier age. Here are effective puppy training tips you can use for your pet.

Crate training a puppy can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. Aside from not being able to understand most of the things that come out of our mouths, the dog might not take too well on the idea of being put inside a box. As such, be very gentle in this regard. If not done with love and gentleness, it can be a very traumatic experience for the canine.

Find a good-sized crate that your dog will not feel cramped in without being too big. Make it as cozy as possible by putting in warm blankets, some dog treats and toys. Gently lead the dog inside the crate by feeding him treats leading up to it. When he is inside, leave the door open and continue to feed and pet him until he is completely relaxed.

After successfully introducing the crate to the pup, it's time to shut the door. Put in his favorite toy inside and let him be totally immersed in it before you slowly close the door. Make sure that he can still see you and hear your voice. Do not open the door when he cries. Instead, talk to him in a reassuring manner until he calms down. When he has quieted down, you can then bring him outside.

When the dog is accustomed to being alone inside the crate, go out of the room a few minutes at a time. If you see he is not getting upset at all, try leaving 10 to 30 minutes at a time. Of course, use your judgment with this. Puppy training tips should always be in line with your dog's personality.

That wasn't so hard was it? Crate training a puppy is a good thing for the pet and owner alike. With a little bit of perseverance and loving discipline-you can be on your way to a happy and obedient dog in no time at all.
