Gourmet Dog Treats - The Best Dog Food

By Geraldine Dimarco

For most of us, canines are not anymore regarded as a pet-they are part of our family. I mean really, you go home to families who love you unconditionally and think you are the greatest no matter what you smell like right? How much more Fido who gets all excited every time you are home? Doesn't he deserve a treat for that? If you answered yes, then this article shows you what you need to know on gourmet dog treats.

Don't get too intimidated. Gourmet doesn't mean that you have to go out in some fancy schmancy poodle shop and purchase an expensive gourmet doggie basket. You can make homemade dog treats as beautiful and delicious as the ones they offer in stores. All it takes is a little bit of effort and a lot of love and you're on your way to becoming the world's best master to a lucky dog.

These yummy goodies are sure to make an impact to just about any animal. You must be very careful though with the ingredients that comprise these treats. I don't know if you know this, but there are several ingredients that are toxic to the canine's system.

Examples of ingredients that are bad for the pet are chocolates, caffeine, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, alcohol and onions. There are some that can be consumed in very minimal quantities; but will prove to be dangerous in larger amounts. Fruits are essentially good for them but it is important that you remove completely the seeds and pits. They contain a substance that trigger cyanide poisoning and can be fatal for the canine if not addressed accordingly.

The great thing with creating these homemade dog treats is that you can pretty much control the minerals and nutrients that go into your pet's diet. Include refreshing fruits (without the seeds) and healthy vegetables in the treats. It doesn't have to be boring or taste yucky. Excite his taste buds by rolling some whole wheat biscuits in peanut butter; or sprinkle parmesan cheese on some toasted veggie toasts.

Now, while there is a temptation to indulge your pet with these delicious and possibly healthy treats-refrain from doing so. Weight control is an essential part in maintaining your pet's good health. Monitor his calorie intake to lower the risk of contracting unfortunate canine diseases. These snacks should only take about 10% of the dog's diet.

You can find many great dog treat recipes on line. Take the time to choose which ones are the most natural and healthy for the animal. Make these biscuits extra special by utilizing unique cookie molds shaped like a bone, a dog's profile, or even paw prints. Who knows, these spectacular gourmet dog treats may be so good you'll find yourself in business supplying these to other excited pet owners.

There are not a lot of creatures that will love you like your dog does. Isn't that enough reason to get your oven fired up right now? Google the best recipes and begin making those delectable treats today!
