Small Dog Breeds List Of A Pekingese

By Steve Schultz

This cute little dog known as the Pekingese is a member of the Toy group, and we all know that those cute little dogs are more of a lapdog than a guard dog. The Pekingese is on the small dog breeds list, yet are not trouble makers. If however, they feel challenged, like a lot of the miniature dog breeds, they will become aggressive and fight for their rights. This breed is generally very majestic, and friendly to those they are familiar with, but can be testy with strangers. So if you are looking to see if the Pekingese is the best dog for me, then remember that they can be difficult to train because of how stubborn they are.

The Pekingese dog traces its roots to China at a time when the Lamist form of Buddhism was rampant and the lion was the symbolic image of Buddha. Therefore Foo dogs which resembled lions were held in high esteem. They were also known as the Lion Dogs and bred carefully with a lot of reverence.

Then the T'ang dynasty took over and this little breed of canine had already become very popular and were treated like royalty. So even miniature dog breeds can achieve a lofty social status. Talk about living the life of luxury, the Pekingese back in those days were pampered by servants all day long. This member of the small dog breed list were often called "sleeve dogs", because they could be carried most everywhere in the sleeve of their owner.

These dogs were taken away during the loot carried out by the British on the Imperial Place in 1960. It is said that it was then that the Pekingese was first noticed by Queen Victoria who took an immediate liking to it and it ended up attaining popularity even in England.

When it came to small dog breeds list, the Pekingese was very popular. It did however take a while for this small breed to become part of the commercial market, because most of their owners were rich. In time the Pekingese would become popular for most class of people worldwide.

For exercise, this breed, like most miniature dog breeds do not require a lot of exercise, because of their size. Usually a few laps around the interior of their house will suffice. So this breed like indoor living because it is a member of the Toy group, so they are a good companion for those living in smaller houses.

With a lot of miniature dog breeds, you need to pay attention to the temperature where they live. They are so small that they do not adjust to extreme changes in temperature, that if not watched closely, can be fatal. The Pekingese needs brushing twice a week to keep their coats from matting.

The Pekingese live up to the age of 13-15 years. They normally have few health problems in the form of trichiasis, KCS,elongated soft palate, skin fold dermatitis, patellar luxation, and stenotic nares. It is best advised that they go in for regular knee and eye tests from time to time.
