Top Five Most Common Breeds Of Hamsters

By Paul Hill

Some of the most popular breeds of hamsters that are pets include Roborovski, Chinese, Winter White Russians, Syrians, and Campbell Russians. Like dogs, there are many different species and genera and some of these names do not necessary mean that this it is a particular breed. Below are some distinctive features of each breed that will help you identify one from the other.

A Syrian hamster is a social animal that popular with children and is easy to care for and handle. It is also called a golden or teddy bear hamster with large cheek pouches and small eyes. It also spots a short tail and lives averagely for about two years with a difference of about six months.

Dwarf Campbell Russian breed are said to be social than the Syrians are as they can be kept in one cage even while of the same sex. They are however less responsive and tend to act nervously resulting in them nipping hence constant supervision is required. They are small in stature with its life span of about two years and have a gray brown fur with a dark strip that runs down the spine.

The Dwarf Winter White Russian can also live in a same sex cage with no problem and is actually active during the day than night. These breed does not have the nasty reputation of biting and nipping but are quick creatures making them a challenge for children to handle. The White Russian comes in three colors pearl, sapphire and an odd combination of the two called sapphire pearl.

Another breed has a distinctive sandy-brown coat, contains a few white marks on the abdominal region as well as over eyes, and sometimes has a white face. It is also a nocturnal creature hence more active at night but has generally good temperament. The Roborovski Dwarf does particularly well in large groups or pairs only if they are introduced at a young age.

Chinese hamster behaves more aggressively when compared with all the other species mentioned above and require each to have its own house, however they have a generally good attitude towards humans. It is not an exceptionally social creature but a number of people have domesticated it successfully. It looks more like a rat or mouse since it has a slender body that is also long a common feature in these rodents.

Even when looking into the different breeds of hamsters it is prudent that you have an idea of who will be taking care of it. Match the individual needs of the person to the general characteristics of the hamster for better results. The rodent is however, a great tool that will instill the virtue of responsibility in children.
