Dog Training Tips For Making Your Dog Poop Where You Want Them To

By Leslie Moore

Aside from being an eye sore a poop in the wrong part of the house will cause a foul smell especially if your humble abode is air-conditioned. Wastes can also cause accidents in case that it has been stepped upon or a curious and innocent baby tried to touch and eat it. This may sound disgusting but it is possible to happen. To prevent such incidents, it would be better if the dog is trained to relieve himself on the right place. This kind of training could last for weeks and while the transition is taking place, you would have to be patient whenever the dog makes a mistake and pooped again on the wrong place.

Removing the Bad Habits

Before you can train them to poop in the right place, you must make them unlearn the habit of pooping on the wrong places of the house. Dogs always leave their mess on dry places and it can be on rugs, mats, tiled floor and concrete. It is fine to scold a dog if they relieved themselves on the wrong place if you caught them red-handed. Avoid yelling at your dog if you didn't catch him while doing it on the wrong spot as they won't understand what you trying to say.

You can buy a dog repellent from a pet store and spray it on the wrong places where he previously relieved himself. This will send him away looking on other spots and you will have more chances to notice him and bring him outside. Make sure to apply it on the area every 24 hours to remain effective. The unlearning process may take weeks and patience is extremely needed before you can gain its convenience.

How to make them Stick to One Pooping Spot

Here comes the process of marking the spot or area where the dog can land the bomb. First, you have to decide whether you will be making a poop box for the dog or you will fence an area which will serve as the dog's bathroom. After you have designed or allocated an area for your dog, the next thing that you need to learn is on how you can associate a command with the process of eliminating wastes. Think of a catchy word or phrase such as "release", "Kraken", "do it", "drop it", "fire" or "go potty". If it's time for the dog to defecate, bring him to the place and utter the word like you are commanding them. If they do what you are expecting them to do, give praises and rewards. Do this regularly and make sure that you are only using one kind of command.

Another easy method of teaching your pet on where to defecate is by leashing him and bringing him to the allocated space outdoors. Be it a fenced area or a soiled box, make sure that it is dry as dogs hate to drop their waste on wet places. Leave them leashed from a post for a while until they have released what they have to release. Once they do, provide a treat and praise and do this regularly until they have totally put it into habit. This lesson teaches the dog that they would have to defecate first on the right spot before they can join their masters inside the house.
