Train Your Dog Appropriately

By Jan K. Tadych

The majority of dog owners make the false presumption that a dog is much smarter than it really is. In fact, a dog merely reacts to you. It wants to be part of the pack and it wants to be recognized, but it's nevertheless a pet with animal instincts. Therefore, I say if you wish to change any kind of unfavorable behaviors, the very best way to approach your dog is NOT to reprimand them or perhaps shout at them, but to focus on changing exactly how they convey these instincts.

When customers began sending us their puppies from Europe, it was fairly unreal: Americans coaching European dogs for European people. When we began to understand why, it made sense. We were providing something other centers weren't. Most training centers in America and European countries use the same method: dog sport training.

You will find centers that downright promote Schutzhund as well as Ring Sport training as "protection training." Others attempt to make sport training look like "real-life," but obviously it's still sports activity. Whatever it's called, sport training prepares your pet dog for only one point: dog sports.

The obedience could be accurate, but sport dogs are conditioned to carry out for short periods within a controlled atmosphere. The education is done entirely with a decoy who will wear training equipment (bite suit or maybe sleeve) and who makes very specific gestures. That situation is unlikely to be duplicated by any possible real-life risk.

We do want to make clear that in our viewpoint there is nothing improper with dog sports. We now have had, and continue to have, people of our staff associated with them.

Concurrently, we are conscious that sport training is sport training, while functional training is definitely functional training. It is possible to cross-train some dogs for both, but generally at the expense of overall performance in either area.

Exactly what it comes down to can be summarized in two words: functional results. You can refer to it as our "mantra." The functional outcomes start with impeccable manners and complete off-leash management and end with skills within protection that are crucial in protecting home and family. All those skills include sophisticated biting abilities, advanced fighting capabilities as well as advanced handler protection exercises.

We provide 5 training programs which range from our Obedience (off-leash obedience) and Protection Dog Basics I and II to sophisticated training with the Executive Protection Dog and Elite Family and Estate Protection Dog courses. All trainings include personal instruction at your home with our training employees. We offer handling instruction to clients in the United States and abroad.
