Proper Care For A Shih Tzu

By Leslie Moore

Being known as the breed with long hair, protruding eyes and short body, Shih Tzu dogs should be highly maintained and the kind of attention that you would have to give should be different than the other kinds of pooches. These dogs are also being seen as companion dogs and they enjoy their owner's presence. If you are planning to purchase and bring one in your home, you will first have to understand their unique attitudes and demands.

Understanding a Shih Tzu

A small lawn or backyard is enough for a Shih Tzu if they need exercise and some place to experience a little bit of sunshine. Since they are small, an exercise is not much of an issue unlike the kind and amount of attention that they require. Shih Tzu dogs can be jealous about small kids which is why some pet stores would advise to grow a Shih Tzu in an environment with no children. Because of their jealousy, they can probably bite or attack small kids. Teach the small kids in your home on how to be good to a Shih Tzu but monitor their moments closely.

Shih Tzus are also the type of dogs that can get stressed easily and they may suffer from sleeplessness and nervousness if they were caught by it. Aside from this, stress can make them bark erratically, destroy things, and tear the house down. Consider their emotions most of the time and don't forget to check and talk to them every once in a while. This can promote a healthy growth among this breed of dogs together with a little exercise and other activities under the heat of the sun.

Grooming and Care

Constant grooming is one of the basic needs of a Shih Tzu. Though food is also a necessity, maintenance of their body and hair plays a big role on their health and sanitation. Regularly visit a pet store and enlist your dogs on different grooming services. You can also do it on your own provided that you do it carefully. To prevent their hair from being tangled and matted, comb their hair every day. When you discover tangles, make use of a detangling spray or just simply cut the tangled portion. Cut their hair on the faces so that it won't get into their eyes.

A Shih Tzu's body attracts dirt and mucus build up which can possibly be concentrated on their face. Clean them regularly with a damp wet cloth. A bath is also a good option but it is advised to use a shampoo specialized for hairy breeds of dogs. Provide high quality of food for as long as you can afford it. In maintaining a Shih Tzu, the vets recommend foods which are expensive but ensure complete nutrition. In the long run, you can save a lot more with those as high quality foods will prevent your Shih Tzu from being sick thus, less expenses for consultations and medications.
