Get Your Dog Into Shape With These Puppy Training Tips

Many dogs end up in shelters because they don't turn out the way their owners hoped they would, but this can often be avoided. A well-trained pooch can be a welcome addition to any family. It's not difficult to train your dog once you know how. Use the tips below to get started.

Dogs will focus on something and ignore all else unless something breaks that attention. If you are consistent and use repetition, your dog will start to wait for your signals before focusing on something.

When training, find a verbal clue your pet can understand so they will know exactly when to do as you say. "yes" is a great bridge word between the dogs positive accomplishment and the reward they receive.

Do not drag out your training sessions for too long. Dogs don't have long attention spans so make sure that your training sessions are kept short. When you want to train more, give the dog a break and come back later.

Start with the easy stuff. This will be great for immediate gratification, and your dog will begin to understand what you expect along the way. You'll have better results this way.

Don't extend training sessions. The attention span of a dog is pretty short, so it is important to keep them interested in training by keeping the training short. You can choose to adopt a more intensive regimen, but only if you are willing to allow your dog a few moments of relaxation and play to break up the session.

Overworking a new puppy with new information will only lead to trouble. Puppies have short attention spans, therefore keep your sessions short and provide ample amounts of praise. If you try to rush and throw in too much information, your puppy will not remember the lesson and you'll have a harder time training him.

Be aware of the other dogs when taking yours for a walk. You have no idea how well trained the other dog is. Keep your dog at a distance from angry or aggressive dogs.

If you're leash-training a puppy, the initial step needs to be putting a collar on them when you play with them. By making your puppy comfortable to wearing a leash, he will be more apt to keep it on.

It is absolutely possible to have a happy and well mannered dog. Proper training and showing your dog lots of affection and kindness are important to making this happen. Use the tips above to turn your dog into a member of the family.
