A Few Steps Towards Finding Success With Your Dog

By Dana Williams

Raising a dog is a big undertaking and long term commitment. The responsibilities that come along with owning a pet are numerous, however so are the rewards. This article aims to provide you with a few useful tips to help you with the different aspects of owning and caring for a dog.

Refrain from making the training sessions with your dogs too long. Extended sessions can make a dog tire out and become bored easily when you are trying to teach them new things. Limit your training sessions to 20-30 minutes, as this will help to keep the full attention of your dog.

If your dog is still getting used to the grooming process, only work with him or her in short bursts. Groom for about five minutes and then stop and move on to another activity. Eventually, start adding on two or three minutes to your total grooming time until your pet is able to handle a full session.

Don't give your dog real bones. Real bones can chip and fragments may become lodged in their mouths or digestive tract. Studies have shown that rawhide bones are good for your dog's health and their teeth. Don't give in and let your dog gnaw on real bones. Stick to rawhide.

Try not to force your dog to eat things. If you're trying to get your dog to eat a new treat and it's not showing any interest, don't force them to eat it. When you first get a dog, you should take some time to get to know what it likes and what it dislikes.

Let your dog chew some rawhide rather than meat bones. Bones can fall apart and become lodged between teeth or digestive system. Rawhide is great for oral health, so don't give Rover any of your T-bone, regardless of how much you know he wants it.

Remember that dogs are creatures of habit and anything you start with him will be expected in the future. If you're not keen on him sleeping with you, don't let him do it only on occasion. Likewise, if you don't want him begging at the table, never offer him a bite of people food. He will learn and accept things if you are consistent.

Not every dog is capable of going to the dog park. Some dogs will not do well around other dogs that they do not know. Get to know how your dog does around friends' or neighbors' dogs before you attempt to take him to the park. This way, you will know if he will be aggressive towards other dogs.

Make sure that you trim your dog's nails on a fairly regular basis. You do not want them to get too long since it will make it uncomfortable for them to walk and they may develop health issues. They should be at a length that just about touches the ground.

Leaving a radio playing while you are gone will help your dog stay calm and may alleviate separation anxiety. The sounds of the music will provide a sense of security and company for your dog. It could be just what he needs to get over his anxiety while he waits for you to come home.

After taking in the above article, you should now have a lot of knowledge on how to properly care for a dog. If you take advantage of this advice, all should go well. Read this article over as many times as you must.
