By Christa Jarvis

There are a great number of breeds of that beautiful animal, the horse. Most people are familiar with the Quarter horse, the Arabian horse and the Thoroughbreds who run in the Kentucky Derby. To find magnificent Cleveland Bay Horses For Sale North Carolina is the place to go.

All members of the breed are bays in a variety of shades including reddish. They originated in Great Britain many centuries ago. At that time they were used as pack horses.

For a time, the breed was diminishing in popularity and numbers. As of the 1970s it has seen a return of interest. However, as of the year 2006, there were only 550 of them in existence around the world. Two organizations for this breed exist, one in United Kingdom and one in the United States.

An advertisement to sell a registered horse is comprehensive. Typical ads start with sex and the registration status as having purebred or part-bred status. Then you will see the registration number after that.

Date of birth, or foal date is shown. The name and registration numbers of the sire and dam are shown. The price is given followed by a full description of color and other details.

The organization that registers them is The Cleveland Bay Horse Society of North America. It came into existence in 1885. Two-thousand stallions and mares were registered within the next twenty-two years.

The numbers were diminished with the advent of the mechanical age and the use of cars. At this time only one-hundred sixty-eight purebreds are registered in Canada and the United States combined. That number continues to grow.

A horse must have one-eighth Cleveland Bay blood to be registered as a part-bred. This must be documented by verifying the sire and dam and previous generations. The part-bred is often called a Cleveland Bay sports horse. Information is collected and saved during a census of these horses as a breed.

They are counted on a worldwide basis. As for competition, they can compete in a variety of horse shows in which other breeds are also entered. There are many examples.

Winning scores are gathered and computed for recognition by the US Dressage Federation All Breeds Awards Program. The same horse and rider team must acquire certain scores. In the Dressage competition, the horse performs a series of intricate steps by seamlessly doing lead changes and direction changes.

It is often called horse dancing due to its beauty and appeal. There must be perfect blending of horse and rider to accomplish it. Both invest years of training and practicing after beginning with raw talent.

A Lifetime Achievement Award is based on a system of keeping score by accumulating points. The animal is judged on performance in parades, shows, trail rides and clinics. It takes multiple seasons of competition to qualify for this prestigious award.

Its intelligence and temperament make the breed easy to train. They are an excellent mount for children to ride, both in horse shows and for pleasure. For these and other reasons the society endeavors to preserve the heritage and promote the future expansion of this admirable breed.
