Advantages and Disadvantages of Having Wood Rabbit Hutch

By Claire Whelan

Many choose to have a rabbit hutch that is made of wood. This is mainly because the material is very attractive and can be decorated according to your choice. However, there are some advantages and disadvantages of having a wooden hutch as enclosure for your pet rabbits.

Advantages

You can see wood in hardware store; it is a great material and is also known to be adaptable and durable. It can protect your pet rabbits from wild animals and from strong winds that can hit your area anytime. For a beginner, you can build a wooden rabbit hutch even if you are not used to that kind of work.

Disadvantages

Rabbits tend to chew on wood if by any chance it has access to it. Your wooden hutch will then have holes right there and then, and it definitely will not last long as expected. So far, this problem is the biggest disadvantage of having a wooden hutch for rabbits. As for the rooftop, you cannot use wood alone because rain water can easily soak through the wood and your rabbits can get wet.

You can augment the roof with the use of waterproof paper to the said problem. This can keep your rabbits dry and free from rain water. Naturally, wood can rot with moisture. And if urine is frequently soaked in the wood, the faster it can rot. It will then be harder for you to clean up the area.

Select the Best Rabbit Hutch

Think first of the positive and negative points of having a wooden hutch. If you have any alternative for wood which is affordable and can work the same as wood does, then that is good news. If you cannot find any, have the wood painted to work with the materials weaknesses.

To keep wood free from urine, you can provide your pets with a litter box. This way, your wood is well-protected from getting soaked with. Also, place a 14 gauge wire against the wooden walls of the hutch to keep your rabbits from eating up the wood.

Have the 3 sides of the hutch enclosed while the 4th side is made of wire so that light and ventilation is well-achieved. For easier cleaning and maintenance, elevate the hutch from the ground.

Rabbits can get used to litter boxes if given enough time. For the meantime, your work is to keep the area always clean and dry.
