Pleasurable, adoring and extremely playful, the Labrador retriever has come to be one of many highly sought after breeds in the United States. In the past, this huge "sporting" breed has been used to search and acquire again birds and these days has the dog turn into a companion dog. The retriever is incredibly regarded for its fine character, easy trainability and intelligence.

The Labrador retriever was rated the superior breed for the year 2008, based on the American Kennel Club.

Personality
The breed is known for its kindly, outgoing and tractable nature. The Lab is eager to please and usually non-aggressive toward man or animal.

Home and Family Relations
The Labrador retriever is good-natured and comfortable enough to live a life with youngsters, though some breed lines have been discovered to be relatively hyperactive. The breed will share the home with another dog if presented and socialized from a young age but has a temptation toward jealousy. They're not the perfect watchdogs as they are not extremely distrustful and might be won over by a welcoming gesture of a unfamiliar person.

Training
Labrador retrievers are intelligent and love to learn. Most Labradors can begin command training at 6 to 8 months of age. At this age they can have twice daily, 10-minute lessons. If the dog wanders physically or mentally, he is still too young to begin training. Should the dog misbehave, the reprimand must be consistent and appropriate.

Special Characteristics
Labrador retrievers are highly effective swimmers, a skill assisted by the webbing in between their toes as well as their water-resistant coats. Also they are passionate hunters.

Special Care
By traditions, the Labrador retriever is a worker and needs frequent exercise. They need to have three walks on a daily basis and not be permitted to stay sedentary and grow overweight. To the standard, an overweight dog will die at a younger age than a trim, energetic dog. The dog may become stressed out and damaging in the home if sufficient exercise is banned .
