If you own a pet then you know full well how much your going to need in pet supplies right off the bat. Over time you will need less but the initial trip to the pet store is the most exciting. Getting a new pet is an exciting thing and you can't wait to spoil this precious animal in any way you can!
Some of the pet supplies you'll need are, of course, dog food if you have a dog, and cat food if you have a cat. It may be tough at first trying to figure out what the best dog and/or cat food is for your cat. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of brands of dog and cat food to choose from.
Most pet foods are made the same, often even employing the same exact research and trials, so the difference comes down usually to taste and weather or not the food manufacturer's food is more healthy or specialized for cats with diabetes and other considerations.
For cats you will need to make sure that your getting the right food for the cat's age. If the cat is a kitten he/she will need more nutrition specifically formulated for kittie cats. The older cat foods are often too big and possibly too hard to comfortably break the food down to chew it, and it's lacking the nutrients the young cat needs.
You'll also need toiletries for cats such as a litter box/bin, cat litter, a pooper scooper, and a scratch pad to save your precious furniture from their sharp claws. Cat's have to sharpen their claws all the time or they grow too much and cause painful problems. You can get cat claw clippers that don't hurt the cat when you clip them.
Pets take a great deal of upkeep, although cats are much easier in the long run to take care of, they do take a bit of close attention when you first bring them home. Pet supplies stores often have trained associates that can answer any questions you may have about pet care and just most of the things you will need for the life of your animal can be found in pet stores. Much of what's in there is also elective such as pet toys, chew toys, and things of that nature.
Pet stores have a lot of options for brushes (for removing loose fur), scratching posts including permanent scratching posts they can also nap on. There are swarms of really cool products for just about anything your dog or cat could need such as water bowls and automated water bowls that act as water fountains moving the water around to break the surface tension and filtering out the bad things in the water. These things are elective but if your serious about your pets health the water filtration and animating contraptions are really quite enjoyable by the pets and it will stop them from always trying to drink out of the toilet!
