Recognizing The Different Dog Breeds

By Jade Davidson

Dogs at present can be found in just about all shapes and forms, it is regarded as as a result of a significant part of evolution, which took place more than 15,000 yrs ago - The Taming of the Grey Wolf. Scientists today believe each dog breed is really a descendant of the "Canis Lupus" - the "Grey Wolf".

The scientists believe that because humans and grey wolves were both hunters, they have existed together. Then mankind have decided finally that they needed to tame these wolves. This has been copied by man throughout time and they have somehow began to breed. Naturally, they selected the ones that are friendly towards them and have trained them to do work to help humans.

These days all regonized dog breeds are in one of seven dog breed categories:

Hounds - Breeds initially employed for hunting often by scent or by eyesight. The scent hounds consist of the Beagle and Bloodhound plus the sight hounds such breeds as the Whippet and Greyhound.

Working Dogs - Across the hundreds of years these types of dogs were uniquely bred for being guards and search and recovery dogs.

Terrier - These dogs were highly conditioned to help look for tracking vermin. They are brave and tough, and will pursue fox, badger, rat, and many different others above and beneath the ground.

Gundogs - These dogs were originally trained to search for live game and get those that were shot and hurt. These category is divided into 4 groups - retriever, spaniels, hunt, point, retrieve, and setters. Some of the breeds are capable of performing similar work as the other sub categories.

Pastoral - These are herding dogs that can be entrusted with helping you work with cattle, sheep and reindeer. This type of animal almost always have a weather resistant double coat that will protect it from the weather when performing tasks in challenging situations.

Utility - This dog breed are primarily of non-sporting origins. They are branded as 'utility' because they execute a specific function and they are basically just very good companions.

Toy - They are small partners and loved to be cuddled all the time. Many were plainly placed in this category although they have the capacity to do more because of their small size.
