Labradoodles Maine were first bred in Australia in 1988 or 1989 by breeder Wally Conron after crossing a Labrador Retriever with a standard poodle. This created a canine with a hypoallergenic coat offering little to no shedding. They also exhibit favorable qualities whether they serve as a guide or therapy dog or a treasured member of the family.
This highly intelligent breed is easily trainable and benefits from both mental and physical play so as not to become bored. They exhibit a very personable demeanor yet still enjoy some quiet time with their owners.
This breed is available in three sizes with the largest being the standard reaches twenty six inches in height. In this class, females weigh no more than sixty pounds and males weigh up to seventy three pounds. The next smaller class is the medium size which can reach twenty one inches in height and weigh up to fifty five pounds or more. The smallest are the miniatures who stand no more than seventeen inches in height and weigh between twenty six to fifty five pounds. As in other breeds, males usually weigh more than the females.
This breed is preferred by those suffering from allergies thanks to minimal shedding and odor even after contact with water. They can have a thick wool-like coat like a poodle or Labrador hair that is curly, wavy, or straight. There is also fleece-like fur that is soft to the touch. Just as with poodles, common colors are cream, silver, chalk, brown, and black. Gold, apricot, and red are other favorites but not as commonplace.
This canine is relatively healthy but may suffer the same problems as the breeds they come from. They may experience hip dysplasia which are abnormally formed hip sockets that can lead to arthritis or becoming crippled. Eye disorders such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy can cause blindness. Addison's Disease occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough steroid hormones.
