Basic Approaches to Help Your Pet Reduce Whining

By Harriet Dederick

It is an accepted fact that people get a lot of comfort from their pets. An animal can provide its owner with a lot of emotional and even physical support. But just as pet owners take a lot of positivity from their pets, so do pets rely on their owners for security, care, and love.

Now, say you own a dog. Man's best friend is one of the easiest animals to read. They are great companions. A person gets as much from his or her dog as the dog takes from its owner. In time, your dog will know when you are sad, afraid, in danger, or need help.

Just as the dog gets to know you, you too will understand and know your dog. Dog sounds are its way of communicating. Whining is the softest and most influential of its whines. A lot of intelligent dogs know that this is the sound to make when it wants its owner to do something. But dog whines should not be ignored because these can also be genuine language.

Some ways for you to break whines that are attention-seeking only are to break what the dog associates with a moment to whine. For example, if the dog doesn't want you to leave but knows that when you pick up your bag it is time to go to the office, try varying this signal by using a different routine before you go or not going immediately after picking up your bag. In short, breaking what the dog associates with the action that causes it to whine could be a way to get your dog to stop whining.

It is important to note through all this that there is always a reason why a dog whines. Finding out they why and then addressing the sound is a good way to tackle this situation.
