Buying A Brand New Puppy Crate And How To Employ It Properly

By Lonnie Gatts

The friendship, unconditional love and pleasure that each of my own puppies have given me all over the years has been invaluable. Of course, the new puppy experience offers some remarkable adventures into re-experiencing the world through the eyes of this very new and impressionable life. However remember that taking that new puppy home comes with the commitment of time, persistence and money for many years.

There is a lot to take into consideration in preparing yourself as well as your home for your new arrival. One of the first items you will need to invest in is a dog or dog crate and its bedding. It's important for your puppy to have an area he can call his own, a hideaway where he could find convenience, an area where he can feel secure. A dog crate with bed linens will become your own puppy's den, his favorite place to nap or take refuge during bad weather.

A dog should not be left alone in a crate for more than 3 hours at a time. After all, we are talking about a dog and they are not able to control their bowels or bladder for a period longer than this. If you're going to be gone longer, than it is suggested you utilize an exercise pen or play pen. Your pup should create a positive mental association with the pet crate. Thus, it should never be used as a form of punishment. If utilized in a bad manner, your dog will learn to fear it and refuse to use it.

Your dog crate is not a replacement for a dog sitter or maybe doggie day care. A dog that is crated for very long doesn't get sufficient human interaction or workout and will probably become troubled or depressed, directly impacting how your dog interacts with you.

In selecting a dog crate make sure you consider what his adult size would be, and buy a cage based on his estimated adult size. The crate should be big enough so that he will be able to stand up and turn around. Certainly, the crate needs to be comfortable so bedding is extremely important.
