By Tai Funk

A bulldog is generally very calm and gentle. But characteristic of any dog, they may become aggressive from time to time. However when the dog becomes too aggressive often, then this becomes a problem. The causes of bulldog aggression could vary from a wide range of causes. In this respect the first step would be to determine the exact cause of aggression by talking to an expert. Overly aggressive dogs may turn out to be very dangerous.

Bulldog aggression may mainly be attributed to three main underlying causes. These are based on the root cause as opposed to triggers of aggressive behavior. The first kind of aggression may be due fear. Secondly, the dog may also be aggressive when faced with anger or a need to dominate anything that is perceived to be threatening. The last type of aggression is associated with a need for the dog to protect its territory since dog's can be very territorial. Yet, medical illness or other causes such as trauma can be underlying causes of aggression.

First time dog owners should look for assistance so as to prevent dog aggression at an early stage. The most advisable thing to do is to train the dog how to socialize when it is still young. This will rule out certain causes. However, aggression may still occur even when the dog is grown up. Dealing with this problem is highly dependent of the dog owners willingness to determine the underlying cause of the dog's behavior.

In cases where the dog is extremely aggressive, behavioral modification would be of great help in dealing with the situation. An expert such as a veterinarian would use their acquired skills to help determine the cause of the problem and come up with ways to change the dog's behavior. On the other hand, a dog owner should train the dog well and establish their role as the pack leader. The result of this is that there will be less aggression towards commands as the bulldog is very dominating.

Moreover, the dog should perceive the owner as a leader. This is one of the fundamental purposes of any good training. Chances are that the dog will eventually be less aggressive towards others and the owner will have greater control of the dog.

As a final point, bulldog aggression is not a permanent problem. The owner of the dog is faced with the duty of investigating the root cause of the problem. However, there are various solutions to the problem and in case the owner cannot find a solution the best option is to seek professional help. It is better to deal with bulldog aggression than solving the problems it may cause.
