Choosing An Animal From Tampa Pet Rescue

By Clinton Geiser

There are lots of great cats and dogs waiting for a home at Tampa pet rescue facilities. Many thousands of animals find themselves homeless every year and would love a family to care for them. Most of the pets are wonderfully friendly and are at shelter through no fault of their own. Given a chance they will make the perfect addition to any family.

Taking on a puppy is a huge commitment and many people just do not realize how much work will be involved. A puppy will be upset to leave his mother and will cry at night keeping everyone awake. There will be days or weeks of mess to clean up until he is housebroken. The puppy will also require a lot of exercise and plenty of outdoor time and a fence yard area is very important.

One of the biggest problem with puppies is that they nip. It is perfectly normal behavior but many people do not understand this. It is especially alarming for people with young children, who may be concerned about their youngsters being bitten by the dog. For this reason alone many puppies are given to shelters.

A good rescue facility will work with the young dogs to get them housebroken. They will also give the pets a thorough check up to make sure they are in good health and their shots are up to date. During this time they will be able to assess the animals temperament and make sure they are friendly. Some pets are just not suitable for families with young children and must be matched with the right home.

All applicants to adopt a pet must undergo a strict screening process. This may include their past experience owning a pet and their current housing situation. Those with no yard space may not want to adopt a young, energetic dog. The shelter can advise each person about which size and breed of dog will be best for them.

Virtually all shelters insist on a spay or neuter policy for their animal before allowing them to go to their new home. This is an excellent idea as it saves the new owner both time and money. Continued on going support to the adopting family should also be available to help with any questions or concerns they may have.

Adopting a dog or cat from a Tampa pet rescue should be a very positive experience for all concerned. The animal will have found a new home for life and the family will have gained a wonderful new addition. Most rescues operate as charities or non profit organizations and a great way to help them is by getting involved in fund raising. They are usually in need of volunteers and this can be a very rewarding experience.
