African Grey Toys Tend To Be Rather Specific

By Dorothea Garner

African grey toys are a subject of much discussion. Such birds are highly intelligent animals and they need constant stimulation. Birds of this breed are curious of their world, so they learn how to keep themselves entertained by their toys easily.

It is said by some, that these birds are very shy of new toys in their cage. This may indeed be true, so it is advised that when introducing a new toy to their personal space of their cage, that you handle the toy before putting it in. The bird will then see that the toy is not going to harm you and will be a little more comfortable playing with it.

Birds such as these, love all sorts of playthings, and it is with this in mind that the new ones are purchased. Choosing age appropriate models is very important. Should one have a new baby bird, it is not appropriate to get a new toy that the bird will not be able to play with, or shall be afraid of. Africans love shredding things to pieces. With the safety of the bird in mind, it is necessary to make sure that they do not pull the toy down to such small pieces that they can swallow or even choke on them.

Intelligent birds such as these can become bored very easily, so it is necessary to keep them as busy and stimulated for most of their day as possible. Some of their time will be used to preen and groom themselves, but if they have a nice toy, they will play with it nonstop. Playthings for these animals can be made of high impact plastic, bird safe rubber, coconut and even steel.

Remember to get ones that are appropriate for the bird. Do not get small fragile items for these birds. Africans have very strong beaks and will love to pick the fragile toy to pieces, but they will soon become bored of this toy. Stay away from playthings with sharp edges and make sure that if the parrot loves bells that they are not 'jingle' bells. Also ensure that the clapper is replaced with a stainless steel ring.

Homemade play sets for these birds are also a good idea. Collect all the bits and pieces from the old playthings and string a couple of new playthings from the old ones. One can make use of a variety of different house hold items. Plastic caps with liners taken out, a nut wrapped in a paper wrapper, bottle corks, and a chewy hide work wonders together. The birds love their selection of colors and the noises they make.

Africans have very strong beaks and they can be very sharp too, pulling most of the hanging toys to pieces with ease. House hold items, such as bottle caps with the liner taken out of them, unwaxed paper cups and even wine bottle corks make for many hours of endless entertainment. Watching them enjoy themselves is also very fulfilling.

African grey toys are not very expensive and it is therefore easy to mix and match the playthings every two to three weeks. Birds such as the Africans can play for a long time, keeping themselves happy and busy. Having these birds can be advantageous for everyone, as they can teach you so much about the breed.
