By Geraldine Dimarco

If you are reading this you are probably a proud owner of a dog- right? You are happy with him and enjoying having him in your life. Of course, life is not always all that rosy for the both of you. Things can happen that can cause discomfort to your pet. We know all about it. Here are essential tips about dog pain relievers you need to know about.

OK, so obviously the dog is suffering from some sort of pain-have you checked why? It is crucial that you correctly establish the source of problem so it can be addressed and dealt with appropriately. Imagine giving Fido a strong dog pain medicine for arthritis when really, all he needs is a good anti-parasite treatment. Have him examined if you believe that he has a more serious sickness that needs proper treatment.

When the vet confirms that the discomfort your dog is experiencing is not that serious, there are several effective ways you can go about treating it that doesn't entail strong medications. Ginger and peppermint extract for example alleviate nausea and car sickness. Help him to relax by getting a few drops of lavender or chamomile oil and rubbing it on his coat or bedding.

If fleas or "hot spots" caused by matted fur is irritating your dog, mix some tea tree oil with water and apply it over the affected area. Have your dog smelling great by rubbing Eucalyptus oil on him-the smell of it also repels parasites away. As much as possible, don't use products with chemicals for your dog. Use gentle herbal shampoos with disinfecting properties on him instead.

Tension can also be a source of serious discomfort for the animal. Relieve him of this by giving him a massage or combing out his hair. When you comb his coat, you can inspect for rocks, ticks, tumors and wounds that the dog may be suffering from. Apply some aloe vera on cuts but if they don't go away after 2 weeks, show it to the vet for him to treat.

Never use human prescription drugs for dog pain medicine. The medications that might be mild for us still contain properties that are very dangerous for the dog. You may not know it, but it can even worsen his health. Take Aspirin for example. Some people think that a small amount of Aspirin is harmless but consistent use of it will actually cause ulcers and thin out the dog's blood.

Now, if your pet's condition is not helped by these herbal remedies, consult the vet for a safe medication you can use for him. NSAIDs or non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs are over-all safe and effectively, particularly when used with a recommended supplement. It is advisable that any medication is closely monitored and given only over a period of time.

These simple and effective dog pain relievers are invaluable as it will help your dog live a better quality of life. Keep his diet as healthy as possible and maintain a good exercise regimen daily. Enjoy your happy and healthy dog today!
