How to Manage Swine Waste

By Lianne Derocco

Swine waste management is a top priority is hog farming. With less care, swine waste can be dangerous not only to the health of the swine you are growing but also to everyone involved in the whole process.

Hog waste is normally managed through a lagoon waste system or deep pit system. Due to the new discoveries in technology especially in the world of waste management different types of systems have been developed, but the systems mentioned above are still preferred by hog farm owners which results to continuous problem with toxins in the environment.

The first system commonly used is the deep pit system which simply refers to a pit made out of concrete that is located below a hog pen. With deep pit system, slats are visible in the floor and serves as ways of wastes to the concrete pit located below the hog pen. On the other hand, in a lagoon waste system, waste plus water added to it is pumped into the lagoon where everything is stored.

Although these two systems are known to be ideal as a lot of hog farmers are using them, there are many problems reported to occur when these two methods are not done properly. When not cared properly to the extent that waste is not properly aerated, these systems can cause top level crusting problem. This specific problem can be resolved or narrowed by using a natural, chemical free product as this can stop the crusting and has a very little effect to the mother earth.

One such product to consider is Activator Plus, which contains no chemicals and instead relies on a carefully selected mix of microbial organisms which work to inoculate and enhance the breakdown or excess organic solids in swine waste and sludge. To use the Activator Plus, you need to mix the product with water and then puncture the crust layer multiple times and then apply the Activator Plus-water mixture on top of your crust layer. This process needs to be repeated every 14 days until the top crust has been liquefied. In addition to liquefying the crust, it eliminates excess odors and flies associated with crusting issues.

As soon as crusting problems are addressed, the use of Agra Sphere is advised by experts. This is a mixture of microbes that prevents sludge from forming so as crusting. This maintenance is proven to safe, safe to the environment and very convenient to use. The only thing that one should do is to toss in spheres enough to fill in the size of your lagoon or pit and as expected, the spheres will immediately prevent problems moving forward.
