When You Have To Build A Handicapped Bathroom

By Lila Barry

People with disabilities have different needs as compared to those that are not physically challenged. Due to their disability, they have a very hard time doing things that are very easy to others. One of these things would be going to the restroom. To help them out, it is important that they have handicapped bathroom that they can use with ease and without chances of hurting themselves.

These special bathrooms are so useful for someone that is a PWD. This is something highly recommended for homes that have a family member that is using a wheelchair, crutch, or any supportive device. It is important that the rooms be modified to make them safer and to make sure that it can easily be used by anyone even those that happen to be disabled. This is also applicable in schools, hospitals, and hotels.

There are now guidelines that people can follow if they wish to make their bathrooms safe for the handicapped. These guidelines make sure that one is actually doing the right way to make the bath safe and well suited for PWDs. Many business establishments take note of these guidelines so they will not get any legal problem.

When modifying rooms to make them safer for the disabled, one thing to change would be your door. Always remember that that the ones that will use the room can be using bulky equipments like a walker, wheelchair, or a crutch. Your door should be wider or bigger so it can accommodate the person and any equipment he is using.

One of the things that have to be present in bathrooms is the grab bar. If you have noticed, many comfort and bathrooms designed for PWD have grab bars strategically placed everywhere. These grabs are what a disabled need because it can support him if he wants to stand up, sit down, or make a transfer.

Floor space is another thing one has to plan before doing anything. These bathrooms need more space considering that it is hard to move in a cubicle or room if the space is too limited. Take careful measurements of the wheelchair to be sure that there is enough rotating space for the wheelchair to maneuver in.

Owners also need to make use of the right tiles or material for their floor. A good material to use would be one that is not slippery and can provide good traction. This has to be done to prevent a person from falling or slipping. There are now many of these special materials that you can use in the market these days.

For the toilet, the height has to go well with the standard type of wheelchair being used these days. You need to place grab bars on the side because others are going to need this as support. Your flush control has to be accessible so one can just reach it after he is done using the toilet.

A handicapped bathroom provides physically individuals a means to take a bath without risking their safety. Designing the room to suit their needs also paves the road to self reliance. A person can use the room without the need to have other people's assistance.
