Cavachons Are A Non Shed Variant Of Two Small Good Natured Breeds

By Kathy Kaufman

Cavachons are one of the most registered mixed breeds in the United States. These small to medium sized dogs were first bred in 1996 from pure bred Bichon Frise and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parents. Their lineage is from dogs known for providing good companionship through the ages. The puppies will come with papers from the American Canine Hybrid Club.

The Cavashon hybrid breed is one of a number of new hybrids bred to produce certain types of canine characteristics. In some cases this breeding has been undertaken to produce dogs that do not shed, unlike one of their ancestral lines. Cross breeding also expands the genetic pool and lowers the likelihood of health problems in pure breeds.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parental line has a long history of being beloved by the English aristocracy. King Charles II has been recorded in several paintings with his preferred pooch by his side. The first record of the species in the United States was in 1956. In this year it was first brought to the U. S. For the first recorded time. The dog is active, gentle and sweet natured toy breed that likes to please. It adjusts to urban or country settings alike.

The breed standard has four shades and the coat is silky and even textured. The four colors are the tricolor combination of tan white and black, the Blenheim combination of chestnut with white, a Ruby red tone and a black and tan tone. The height and weight is closer to young spaniels, before they grow to maturity.

The diminutive and muscular Bichon Frise has a pleasant disposition. Its history is traced to a Spanish water spaniel that later gained popularity in French royal courts during the 1500s. It has a curling tail and a face with noticeable dark eyes with an inquisitive appearance.

The low shedding double coat makes it an appealing breed for allergy sufferers. The top coat has a rough texture and the undercoat is silky in contrast. Regular grooming is needed to ward off any matting. The shade of the coat is white, although there be some buff, apricot or cream shading in some areas of the body. The disposition of this dog is active with a mellow personality.

The Cavachons are generally 10 to 15 inches in height and weigh between 10 and 25 pounds. As with hybrids there will be offspring that may be smaller or larger than their typical weight. The hair color is often white, black, tan or sable colored or a mix. The hair has a silky and loose, wavy texture. It is considered hypoallergenic because shedding is not a factor owners need to worry about. The average life expectancy is between 10 and 12 years, which is about the same as its lineage.

Cavachons make loving pets that do not thrive when they are left alone for long periods of time. Families will enjoy their nonaggressive companionship. If they are introduced at a young age to other dogs and cats, they are very sociable. Early socialization and obedience training is highly recommended. These diminutive intelligent pets are easily trained with patient consistency. When well trained, they will adapt to any environment. Daily walks and play time are advised. Considerable grooming will be required. Most common health issues are hip dysplasia, ear infections, heart problems and skin irritations or sensitivities. Breeders have noticed that F1 or first generation crosses are a better guarantee of the non-shedding trait of the Bichon.
