When Seeking An English Cream Retriever For Sale Contact Reputable Breeders

By Lila Barry

When searching for an English Cream Retriever for sale be sure to contact reputable breeders. Your first questions to a breeder should focus on the health of his breeding stock. The few genetic problems which beset the breed are gradually being screened out. Eye problems, and hip and elbow dysplasia are some of the disorders that veterinarians can now detect. Documentation should be available to show the results of such testing.

The golden retriever originated in Scotland. From the mid 18th century, hunting game and wildfowl were favored occupations of the aristocracy. Retrievers were needed to bring waterfowl back to their masters. They needed to be at home in the water because of the number of rivers and lakes. They also needed 'soft mouths' to bring back birds unscathed. Several different breeds were used in the development of the English retriever. It is easily trained as well as being active and powerful.

This water-loving breed is of medium size. The double coat has dense inner coat. This insulates them against both the heat and the cold. The outer hair is longer hairs and slightly wavy. These lie flat and repel the water. The breed is kind and friendly. They are suited to both country and suburban living. Their yard should be securely fenced as, being a sporting dog, they are inclined to wander off if something takes their fancy.

The modern-day retriever has found a role in a number of fields apart from being the ideal family dog. They are very people-oriented and are used as guide dogs for the blind, hearing dogs for the deaf and, indeed, as any type of service dog. Many are now finding a niche as companions to children with autism. Others are trained to help epileptics or those with diabetes. They are taught to recognize the early signs of a seizure, warning the person to get to a safe area. Others learn to detect the particular odor of low blood sugar. Search and rescue duties and drug detection are other occupations at which they excel.

The English retriever is thicker and sturdier than his American counterpart. The legs are not so long. The muzzle is wide and short. The tail is also shorter. The eyes are round and dark rather than triangular in shape. Males are a maximum of 24 inches at the shoulder.

Small amounts of the top coat are shed continually while the undercoat is shed twice a year. A too-long coat is a disadvantage when retrieving wildfowl. Regular grooming is recommended. This will lessen the amount of shedding. They need the occasional bath. The ears should be regularly checked for ear infections.

This breed makes an ideal family dog, trusting and gentle with humans. It is very patient with children. Active and fun-loving, it requires plenty of exercise. It has a strong work ethic and care should be taken not to overwork them.

Because of their gentle, friendly nature, they do not make good guard dogs. They are very tolerant of other pets and often become surrogate mothers to any small animals or birds that need a motherly touch. Family pets easily become adept at agility and obedience trials. Being highly intelligent, they should be trained in a kindly manner. There is no need for harsh commands as they only wish to please. If seeking an English Cream Retriever for sale, look for a reputable breeder near you.
