E Collar Alternatives You Can Use

By Claudine Hodges

The Elizabethan collar is a barrier that dissuades your pet from licking or biting their wounds. This is especially useful when they have just undergone surgery. It is one way of preventing the wound from opening up or getting worst. It has a cone like shape that is attached to the collars of your pets so that they would not be able to turn around to much or scratch their heads when there is a wound in those areas.

Since your pets do not the capacity to control them selves, you have to do it for them. By putting an e collar around their necks, scratching or biting the hurting part can be avoided. And it would heal faster. But if this does not seem to work, you can always go for other options such as e collar alternatives.

There are situations when these highly effective collars are not so effective. One of the said situation is when they take advantage of the plastic nature of the cone to break certain things. This is usually a sign that they are not comfortable with wearing a cone around their necks. This could also mean that the wound is getting itchy and they are frustrated about it.

There are also other animals that would not try to ram the cone on things that are breakable. Instead, they would try it on your knees or on you. This is something that is beneficial since they do not have to break things anymore. But you are the one receiving all the blow.

There are others who have the tendency to behave in a violent manner and it is not very helpful at all because it can open up the wound again. And you need to go back to the vets to have it stitched again. If this is the case, there is not telling when it will heal. That is why you have to think of another way on how to stop them from barraging their wounds.

Bigger dogs have the capacity to break out or break the cone completely. This especially happens if they are intent on removing it and found out that breaking it would be a good way to make it useless. In this case, you must opt for something that is not made of plastic so that it would not be susceptible to breakage.

One of the alternatives that is recommended by the vets would be the BiteNot collars. These are the ones that would look like a neck brace if the person is the one who is wearing. But this is only for those who have wounds on the rear areas. It will not work if the lesion is on the upper limb because they can still scratch.

For owners who want to assure that their pets are comfortable with their cones, you can opt for the soft and pillow like blow ups. This has the same appearance as the pillows that you will use during flights. However, if you have bigger dogs, this is an alternative that would not last too long.

There are owners who opt for used shirts and socks. If the lesion is in an area in the body, you can cover it up with a tee shirt. This way, it would not be too bulky. If the cuts or the surgery was performed in the leg part, you can make use of worn out socks, just cut the bottom part to make a hole so that you can let their foot through.
