Can Dogs Shed Tears of Sadness

By Jerry Welsh

Skeptics would always be ready to assert that dogs don't cry. Dogs, no matter how intelligent do not have emotions thus it would be impossible for these animals to shed tears. Dogs are indeed man's best friends and one pet would not be enough for a dog lover. If the first pet is gone, another one would take its place. Dogs are the most loved and pampered pets. Pet owner have all the opportunities to see if the pet is crying because of the attention showered on the pet. Seeing the tears flowing on the dog's face can be difficult as the tears will be readily absorbed by the fur but a loving owner would easily know if the pet is not its usual lively self.

Dogs, just like humans have tear glands so the tears will be excreted through the tear ducts. Tear stains on the face of the dog are often the concern of people owning dogs with light colored coats. The tears produced by the tear glands have the purpose of lubricating the eyes and flushing out dirt that managed to enter the eyes

Although the tear fall may not be seen, it is possible to see the dog's eyes brimming with tears. Another sigh that the dog can cry are the tear stains on the face. These signs of crying are not attributed to the emotional state of the dog but to a medical condition or to a foreign object in the dog's eyes. Clugged tear ducts is one of the reason why the dog is tearing. Dogs can shed tears but they have no ability to cry because they do not have emotions.

Dog lovers would not agree to the views of scientists. People that have formed strong ties with their pets would aver that dogs have developed many human-like qualities. After years of association with humans, dogs have come to take on a lot of human behaviors.

Man's best friends form strong associations with their masters. It is therefore not surprising if the dog would show grief at the death of the master. There are many stories that tell how the dog would howl, whine and cry when parted from its beloved master. The howling and the mournful cries of a loyal pet after the death of the master would make you want rush to the dog's side to offer comfort.

Even if it is true that dogs don't really cry the way we humans do, it would still be the responsibility of the owner to know why the dog is making crying sounds. The crying of the dog may not be a sign of loneliness but a symptom that all is not well with its health.
