The Different Roles Of Horses In Society Today

By Byron Jonas

Man has created different roles of horses in society ranging from leisure to work. The history shared by man and these animals is long and colorful. Many advances in modern societies can be directly linked to the domestication of these noble creatures.

After being domesticated for food, humans realized the benefits of riding the animals and began using them for transportation. With the increased ability in movement, man began experiencing advances in trade, technology, and exploration. The end of the Dark Ages is attributed to the use of the equines by mankind.

Horses today have many different roles. Some cultures still use them animals as a source of food, but others treat them as a beloved member of the family, providing them with a life of relaxation and premium care. These noble animals maintain positions within law enforcement and the military as well.

Many cultures view the ownership of an equine as a sign of wealth. With the size of the animals and the care requirements lending support to this assumption. The animals used for work purposes are not considered in this illogical theory.

Equine athletes provide the opportunity for large financial investments, losses or gains. Most of this occurs through competitions, centered around some form of a race. The races are a large source of revenue because the betting that is traditionally done is in excessive amounts. The competitions last for various lengths and on different courses, some will also use a carriage.

Another form of competition includes show, though these events are typically not bet upon. The shows are based upon accuracy and skill of horse and rider, as well as confirmation of the animal. These competitions are usually performed for social stature, though occasionally there is a gift of cash or other monetary value to the winner.

Many animals are also still used in traditional forms. They are put to work plowing, pulling wagons, or other types of loads. These animals can often be seen on ranches working livestock as well. This highly adaptable animal is found in cities, forests, farms and ranches competing whatever task or use it is they have been acquired for.

Even with a long history together, there is still a great deal that is not known about these versatile beasts. With a very wide difference in what is considered appropriate application of these animals form region to region a regular standard of care has not been established. The different roles of horses in society will continue to change, but it will surely not diminish.
