A Review of the LitterMaid Self-Cleaning Litter Box

By Athena Hunter

One question most people will ask themselves is whether or not a self cleaning litter box is really a good value for the money. You do have to pay more for a self-cleaning litter box, and there's some maintenance involved, but you can be spared the familiar task of cleaning out the litter box one or more times per day. LitterMaid self cleaning litter boxes are the focus of this article, keep reading for information on how they measure up.

The most popular model above the basic edition is the LitterMaid LME500 which is available in a metallic red color for a more modern look. Your cat of course won't give a second look at it but the appearance can make owning a cat and dealing with its litter just a bit less unattractive. This model is best for the smaller cat. The Elite model would be a better choice if you have a larger cat.

If you are looking for a semi-automatic unit then the LitterMaid makes a One-Step Litterbox that would be less expensive. There are expensive units as well as inexpensive ones like this one that you have to step on a pedal for the rake to sweep away the waste. This unit is still easier and more sanitary than the traditional cat box, as you don't have to do any scooping. The One-Step comes with four waste receptacles and four carbon filters, like the fully automated models, so odors are controlled. You can take the rake out that makes it easy to clean. This semi-automated litter box sells for about $69, as opposed to the fully automated ones, which are over $100, so this is a good solution for anyone on a budget.

The biggest complaint from those who've purchased LitterMaid boxes is the cleaning rake jams sometimes. Furthermore, the rake doesn't always succeed at getting all of the wastes into the container, so it's not a perfect solution. You also have to clean the rakes regularly, as the clumping litter clogs them up.

These issues can take away from the convenience of a self cleaning litter box for some. If you study customer reviews on these products, you'll find that there's a big difference in opinions about how well they work. You should call Litter Maid's customer service for repairs or a replacement part if you notice any problems with your box.

You never have to clean a dirty liter box again with this alternative. These boxes aren't perfect for everyone, some have experienced failing rakes among other things. The choice is really yours but you must still consider the facts before deciding on which solution is best for you since there really isn't an ideal solution.
