Great Peanut Butter Dog Cookies

By Pamela Hardy

A dog can quickly become like a beloved family member. As with any member of the family, the pet's health becomes a subject of great concern. Making special homemade treats such as peanut butter dog cookies can be a wonderful way to show a pet how much they are loved and benefit their health at the same time.

Most of the treats sold in stores contain a jumble of preservatives and additives that may do more harm than good. People who prepare homemade snacks for their pets feel they have more control over their pet's health. It is also a great way to know what they are eating.

A pet's nutritional intake directly affects their overall health. A proper diet will enhance their immune system and help them fight allergies and lower their risk of contracting cancer by removing harmful additives. The right diet can also help a dog who has weight issues or who may suffer from hot spots.

There are many recipes for delicious dog treats. One in particular requires a cup of peanut butter (chunky, smooth or a combination of both), a cup of water and one of dried oats, two cups of flour (preferably whole wheat), an egg and one quarter cup of canola oil. All ingredients are thoroughly mixed in a large bowl then spread out on lightly floured wax paper until about 3/4 inches thick.

Cut the batter into bars or for more fun, use cookie cutters in doggy themed shapes. Place them on a cookie sheet that has been lightly greased. Place the cookies into a 350 degree oven for twenty minutes, flip them over and bake for another twenty minutes. Allow to cool for up to two hours or until hardened.

Any pet will be super excited to receive such delicious treats. These peanut butter dog cookies have a great texture to compliment their great taste. Pet owners can feel confident they have provided their dog with a health boosting snack.
