Proper Care Methods for Betta Fish

By James Conar

In this article, I will cover the many aspects of Betta fish care. There are many things you must consider, when caring for Betta fish. There are so many people who fail to take the necessary precautions when caring for their pet Beta. Do not let this be you. Follow these tips and guidelines to keep your pet fish happy and healthy.

The first thing that I will be covering is the journey home. Many people do not think about the dangers of transporting a Betta from one point to another. Unfortunately, many pet fish die before they are ever transported to their fish tanks. I hope that you don't fall into this category. Keep your Beta close to you. Hold the bag or bowl to ensure that they are safely transported home.

Once you have safely arrived home, it is time to put them in their new home. If you have taken all the proper precautions, you should have a five gallon fish tank already set up. If not, you should purchase a five gallon tank because a standard fish bowl is not enough. Be sure to put the tank in a secure location. Preferably, you should put the tank in a location that is not in contact with direct sunlight. Pets like cats can also be a problem. So be sure to have a high quality tank cover to protect your Beta from predators.

The next thing you will need to do is set up your water filter system. This is the key to increasing your Betta's lifespan. When a tank gets dirty enough, Betta diseases can be a danger to worry about. To avoid these diseases, simply install a standard filtration system. It doesn't matter what kind you get, as long as it works.

Since Betta fish are from Southeast Asia, it would be wise to invest in a nice water heater. They originally lived in environments that were around 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit. So you should definitely create a similar environment in their fish tank. This will surely increase the life expectancy of these fish.

Pellets and flakes are among the most common fish food you could purchase. You can try almost any type of food for Betta fish. However, be sure to inspect the quality of the food before feeding it to your fish. Something that many people get wrong is feeding patterns. They stuff their Beta fish full of so much food that it eventually dies. Betta fish do not need to eat that often. Feeding your Beta four times a week is good.
