Understanding Why Your Dog Desperately Wants To Be Free

By Steve Cote

If you're the owner of a dog that won't come back when called then you could need to switch your approach. There may be many reasons for a dog not returning when asked which include shortage of coaching, distraction or poor motivation. Recall is among the most simple things that will go wrong in the relationship with our dogs. Fortunately it is also one of the swiftest things to retrain if carried out properly. To ensure that a dog will come back when called you've got to make it worth his while.

Initially you must teach your dog what calling his name means. It may appear stupid but some dogs will never have learned recall. You need to sanction into your dog's mind that when you call him then he must return to you.

You can practice this by beginning little. Ask your dog to sit then take one step away from him, and then simply say his name followed by come and give him a reward for taking the step towards you. This method can be built up to extend distance gradually, yet you must always set the dog up to achieve success by not asking too much too soon. There are lots of tricks and games you can use for recall improvement but they must all be positive and a good experience for the dog.

You must also motivate your dog to return to you. Put yourself in his mind for a moment and try and work out what's most inclined to get him running to you. If he likes toys then maybe it is a squeaky rubber animal that works best. If your dog likes food and nice treats then offer this for a great return.

Diversions can be the worst thing when learning how to train your dog to return. Start in a quiet area and only build up to calling him passed distractions when his recall is ideal in low distraction areas. If your dog is distracted he will be far less sure to return when called.
