By Harcourt Jane

You cannot completely stop a dog from barking but it is advisable for pet owners to deal with excessive bulldog barking. The barking can become too much for family members, friends and the neighbors. If it interferes with the peace of those around, the owner should deal with it. There are different strategies that should be used that are effective.

If the dog is barking too much a person should try and find out the main reason why the pet is barking. A bulldog may start barking for a variety of reasons and some can easily be solved by the owner. Some of the reasons can be to protect its territory or it could be harm or illness related. Whichever the case, a person should investigate before choosing a way to deal with it.

Bulldogs love attention. The dog may start barking just to get attention. An owner should be aware of this and not reinforce the behavior. The worst thing that the owner can do is to give into its demands. Once this happens the dog will use this to its advantage and will start barking each time it needs some attention.

The use of commands is very effective in training bulldogs to follow instructions. It can be trained commands that will make it to stop barking immediately. This is another very beneficial method that is very convenient and effective.

Using a treat is advisable. In this case the owner should wait for the dog to start barking. A person should use this opportunity to place a treat by the dog's nose. The bulldog will stop barking in order to sniff the treat. This is when the trainer should say the words that one wants to use on the dog to stop it from barking. When the bulldog is silent the trainer should praise the dog by using encouraging words such as "good dog" then give the dog the treat.

Another effective way to train the dog to stop barking is to train the dog to bark on command. A stimulus should be used that will cause the dog to start barking. A person should use the stimulus with a command, When the stimulus is removed the dog will stop barking and you should also use another word to make it stop.

The methods discussed above should be done repeatedly. This will ensure that the dog effectively learns all the commands. Consistency is also very important to stop bulldog barking. The same words and signals should be used repeatedly so that it can become familiar with them. Changing them will delay the training process.
