How to Get the Best From Your Pet Talking Bird

By Amanda D. Baudino

We've all previously seen them on television and at the cinema; parrots that are able to have whole conversations with their trainers , reacting to a wide number of questions with their large lexicon and an ostensibly huge understanding of what the words actually mean . You may even have gone out and bought yourself one of these lovely beasts with a view to amazing your family with the chats you can carry out with the parrot, or the huge variety of things that it can speak to them when they come to see it. But it's not nearly as straightforward as that- unfortunately speech birds don't tend to mimic words simply by overhearing your own speech ; they don't understand passively or by osmosis and you will soon learn if you hadn't realised already that the birds in films and on TV have a quantity of words at their disposal that is the outcome of huge numbers of hours of graft and education.

But does not necessarily imply that training a talking bird can't be fun - indeed, teaching the animal to speak and all the hardships of that are a key aspect of the enjoyment of having a speaking bird. You'll come to realise that each small improvement and every individual additional word that the parrot picks up will be all the more valuable for the quantity of work you have put into training it. You will also be improving yourself at the same time in addition, coming to understand how to coach a parrot to learn words and having a far more distinct appreciation of the parrot's intelligence , which will ultimately only have a terrific impact on the bond you have with your animal and benefit your relationship with this pet and any others you may get in the future.

Training the animal to talk is of course only part of the job of the conscientious parrot keeper- you will, in addition, need to learn properly how to care for the animal , what to feed it, what volume of feed to feed and when it will want feeding . You will also need to have a firm grasp of where and how to accommodate the parrot, what other equipment it might have need of to keep itself amused, how to clean it, and hundreds of other little questions and jobsthat you didn't realise you didn't understand until you needed to know them but didn't!

So if you have picked a speech bird and are having a devil of a job to get it to learn even a few phrases then you need to teach yourself- pick up a guide to both looking after and coaching the animal and you will enhance your joy in the pet and the animal's quality of life beyond all recognition. Guide books can be very useful here, by reading it before you get your first bird you can research all about training a parrot and also study the many varieties of parrot that you might select .

Even better than a guide book about parrot training though is a course that is specifically designed to grow with you and your understanding , coaching you at frequent intervals with all the minutiae you should know, exactly when you need to know it. To ensure optimum development and enjoyment for the totality of your relationship with your new pet bird , I recommend an expert parrot training course for this purpose.
