Kinds Of Rare Breed Chickens

By Janell Bowers

An aromatic, tasty, and tender meat, it is what most people could think of when they hear the word chicken. Hearing the word even makes some hungry. But it is not known to many they are more than just main dishes. There are rare breed chickens that could be made as pets.

The kind of chicken that makes the stomachs of people roar when they hear the word is part of the broilers class. Broilers are the ones raised for their meats. They are the choice of most poultry farmers because of their tender meat and very fast growth. Also, some poultry feeds further enhance the growth of broilers making them ready to be harvested by day thirty.

But there are people who love chickens not for their taste but raise them as pets. Though some broilers or organic chickens are made as pet, the ones that are most commonly domesticated are those of the rare breeds

These rare breed are usually the chickens that possess unique and peculiar characteristics. For example, there is a breed known as the Silkie whose feathers are so fine that it looks like a fur and has dark blue skin and bones. The feathers of a Silkie are long, white, and fluffy, and owners love them as pets not only because they are adorable but because they are also gentle and timid creatures.

If there are adorable breeds, there are also those that are not that friendly looking and the Naked Neck belong to this group. Naked Necks, as its name suggests have necks that are not covered in feathers. It is instead covered with a red skin that resembles its comb (the red part above the chicken head). Though some are turned off by this characteristic of the Naked Neck, some adore the peculiarity of the chicken.

In mythology, there exists an immortal bird called the Phoenix that has flames for its feather and has a magnificent looking long tail making it appear more majestic as it glides the skies. Fowl lovers would probably die to have one of those if ever it existed in real life. But they are not just out of luck, there is a chicken breed that possesses a tail which is similar to that of a Phoenix and even bears the name of the legendary bird. Though Phoenixes does not have flames for a feather, their tails could grow up to 18 inches.

If you are not that thrilled by the Phoenix, breed that looks like wearing and Indian hat perhaps? Polish chickens grow on their heads long feathers that protrude upward making them look like wearing large feather hats. Though its name suggests that the breed came from Poland, it is actually found in Europe.

There are lots of other kinds of rare breed chickens that are suitable to be made as pets. Some seem to have horns, weird feathers, blue colored eggs, etc. But whatever peculiarities they may possess, they are sure to bring you a sense of joy like dogs and cats do.
