Royal Poodles Provide Heaps Of Fun For Families

By Clinton Sherfey

The term royal poodles is a marketing term. The type is recognized by the major international kennel clubs. The American Kennel Club recognizes the Standard, Miniature and Toy. The Standard is over 15 inches tall, the Miniature between 10 and 15 inches and the Toy 10 inches or under. Some standard poodle breeders are attempting to breed even taller dogs and these are being marketed as 'royal'.

Most kennel clubs do not recognize the standard particolored poodle either although they have been around for many, many years. Particolored dogs have patches of color interspersed with patches of white. All colors are seen including black, red, blue, brown and apricot. There are now clubs devoted to promoting these striking multi-colored animals.

As long ago as 30 AD, images of the breed have appeared on ancient coins from Rome and Greece. The breed originated n Germany but became very popular in France. Despite its one-time image as a fashion accessory, the standard poodle makes a superb hunting companion and retriever.

The dogs are trimmed in several different patterns. There was a practical reason for this. The long coat became very heavy when the dog went into the water to retrieve waterbirds. Hair from around the hindquarters was removed, making swimming easier. The mane on the neck and shoulders was left as this protected the dog from the freezing waters. The leg bracelets keep the joints warmer. Leaving a pompom on the tail made it easier for owners to locate the dog when it was swimming.

The poodle was once a great favorite in the circus. They learn very quickly but become bored with excessive repetition. They bond well with children and other pets. The poodle does not like being left on his own but needs to be with his family. They are healthy dogs, living around fifteen years.

Reputable standard poodle breeders will only breed from their best dogs. Backyard breeders sometimes mate their largest dogs to each other regardless of possible inbreeding or line-breeding complications. Before purchasing a royal poodle you should check out the parentage of your prospective new pet.

The poodle is the dog of choice for many people because of its coat qualities. It is non-shedding and hypo-allergenic so is ideal for those who are allergic to dog fur. They should be trimmed every six to eight weeks. A quality poodle is well-proportioned and square in appearance. By purchasing Royal poodles from reputable standard poodle breeders, the public can be reassured they are buying a friend for life.
