The Benefits Of Dog Training

By Rick Baugh

The process of dog training should be enjoyable for both you and your pet. There will be difficult times of course, but the individual attention you give your dog will make the relationship between the two of you stronger. Over time you will turn this new addition into your home into a loved and trusted member of the family.

Different individuals want different things from their pets but most want an animal that will not be aggressive towards other pets or people, who will respond to the most basic common commands and which does not chew furniture or keep the neighbors awake barking. There are two major aspects to training, removing bad behaviors and teaching obedience.

It may be easier to train a young animal with no bad habits to break but learning can take place at any age and all breeds can be trained to a greater or lesser extent. Different types of dogs have different characteristics. Your work will be easier if you are able to choose an animal that suits your needs, abilities and environment.

Dogs, like humans, are leaning all the time so it is important that you teach him what you want him to know. Making sense of the world around you and using the things you have learnt is natural survival behavior. As soon as your pet arrives in his new home he will be wanting to belong to the family and will be trying to understand what his place within it is.

New owners may benefit from reading some of the books that have been written on the subjects of obedience and behavior to find an approach that suits them and their pet. There are many different methods and various schools of thought.

Owners of animals with problematic behaviors or those whose dog will have a working role might benefit from one-to-one lessons with a canine behavior expert. Other people find group classes helpful; these can be found in most areas. Attending a group session also gives owners the chance to discuss problems or share their success stories with others who can empathize with their experiences.

You will feel more relaxed around your dog if you know you can trust him to do as you ask him. Your dog will be happier if he understands what you expect of him and knows how to gain your approval. You can give your dog more freedom if you know he will obey when you need him to. Successful dog training will enhance the relationship between the pair of you.
