Boston Terriers are fun, smart, and lively small dogs that can bring joy to an adoptive family. The have been given the nickname "The American Gentleman" for their resemblance to a man dressed up in a tuxedo. If one is considering adopting Boston Terriers puppies for sale it's best to first find out what this breed needs in order to thrive and make sure it is a good choice.

Originally bred in Boston, Massachusetts, this breed was developed by by crossing a white English Terrier with an English Bulldog. It is an exclusively American breed of dog. The earliest ancestors of these dogs were larger in size than the modern ones and were mainly used for pit-fighting.

These dogs have a small, sturdy build, a square-shaped head with a short muzzle, wide-set eyes, pointy ears, and a black nose. They have a short, fine coat which may be brindle, seal, or black with white markings. They usually weigh between 12 and 25 pounds and stand about 15-17 inches in height.

Boston Terriers are known for their affectionate nature and quirky personalities. They are quick learners and generally not hard to train, although they may develop "small dog syndrome" if their masters do not exercise proper authority over them. These pups are good playmates for children and normally get along with other household pets. Sometimes housetraining can be a challenge, so gentle firmness is necessary.

This breed is a flexible one which can adapt to both city and country life. They are happy romping about in a yard with children or being taken for a walk on the leash. Although they don't have a high exercise requirement, it is still important to provide these dogs with enough physical and mental stimulation as to keep them entertained and in good health.

Boston Terriers live to be about 12 years old on average, and sometimes even older. They are a breed which is not plagued with many health issues, except they do tend to be somewhat more prone to eye conditions such as cataracts. During exercise, it is important to not allow the dog to get over-exerted, as this can bring on respiratory problems.

With a short, smooth coat, all these dogs require in terms of grooming is the occasional bath and brushing with a firm brush. They are quite clean and do not have much of a "dog smell". Their faces, especially around the eyes needs to be wiped off at least once a day with a cloth. Nail clipping should be done as needed. Following time spent outdoors, the dog's eyes and ears should be inspected for grass seeds and its ears checked for ticks.

These great family pets make loyal and loving companions for children right up to seniors. Alert and watchful, they are often good watchdogs besides being great lap cuddlers. When selecting Boston Terriers puppies for sale it is a good idea to see either or both parents and choose a friendly, calm pup who is neither too bold or stand-offish.
