Tips For Those Shopping For Silver Labrador Retriever Puppies For Sale

By Marissa Velazquez

Many canine enthusiasts find Labrador retrievers appealing. Even though there is some controversy surrounding the breed, the popularity of silver Labradors has increased throughout the world over the past few years. Such dogs are not only loyal and lovable, but they are not difficult to train. This is why those looking for silver Labrador retriever puppies for sale will almost certainly be pleased with their decision.

Originally from Canada, the Newfoundland area to be specific, this breed was initially developed to assist fishermen with pulling their heavy nets from the icy, Arctic waters into their boats. The breed then made its way to England and other parts of Europe, where its retrieving instincts were fine-tuned by dog breeders. Such dogs usually have gentle, mild dispositions, and as previously mentioned, are renowned for their loyalty to their owners.

As previously stated, the silver lab is not recognized by all animal experts. For instance, the American Kennel Club only recognizes the traditional chocolate, yellow, and black Labrador colors. However, silver Labradors are rejected by this organization, as they claim they are not purebred. Interestingly, many breeders ignore this rejection, and fortunately, the latter has not affected the dog's popularity among animal enthusiasts.

Numerous breeders claim that the lineage of this dog proves that it is a purebred. Individuals who debate this claim that the silver Lab is a cross between the traditional Labrador retriever and the Weimaraner canine breed. Genetic mapping, as well as DNA testing, were completed at the end of the 20th century, and numerous dog experts around the world evaluated the ancestry of such canines. These individuals reached the conclusion that its status as a purebred is not debatable.

Even though such controversy will probably never cease, the aforementioned dogs have characteristics that obviously prove they belong to the Lab breed. For example, their bodies are solid and quite muscular, and their coats are water-resistant. They have short, stiff hair and their muzzles are usually broad. They have wide heads and pendant-like ears.

The otter-like tails of these dogs are one of their classic trademarks, as they are quite thick where they attach to the body of the dog, but then taper off to a fine point. Because they are natural swimmers, their feet are somewhat webbed. All dogs of this type are usually born with blue eyes, but when they reach approximately six months of age, their eyes turn golden.

There are many breeders who make silver labs their specialty. This is why they are not difficult to find in most areas of the country. It is important, however, to conduct business only with breeders who are reputable. The kennels where the dogs were reared should always be visited by the prospective buyer, and the latter should never agree to meet the seller in an alternate location when buying such a dog. Unfortunately, over the past decade, puppy mills have become commonplace. Therefore, customers should do everything possible to avoid acquiring a pet from such an establishment.

When shopping for silver Labrador retriever puppies for sale, one should also ask the breeder to see the puppy's parents. In addition, consumers should ask if the breeder is aware of any health problems in the dog's lineage. Ultimately, anyone who chooses to own these beautiful, lovable pets will not regret their decision.
