Use Reputable Royal Standard Poodle Breeders

By Marissa Velazquez

For hundreds of years, poodles have been used in all kinds of capacities. They are classified as a hunting or gun dog by the Westminster Kennel Club and were originally intended to be a water retriever. They are intelligent and versatile dogs that have been used beyond what they were meant for and were even accepted by the US Army as one of the 32 breeds used as "war dogs". Royal standard poodle breeders try to maintain a standard of dog that has been established for centuries.

As a breed, poodles need to conform to a certain standard of appearance. They are supposed to be about as long from breast bone to rump as they are tall from the shoulders to the ground. Their ears should fold over the head and the coat is curly.

Being kept in substandard conditions will often affect the temperament of an animal. Because the animals are not properly socialized, the parent animals are often not suitable for adoption as pets or rescue animals. Sometimes, after their potential as breeders is fully realized, they are killed outright. The remaining puppies are sold, en masse, to commercial pet store chains. The process of shipping them results in death for many puppies who are already prone to sicknesses such as kennel cough, pneumonia and in the case of many animals, hip dysplasia.

As house pets, poodles excel past what most working dogs are capable of. They are not as high strung as many work dogs, though without proper exercise they can become quite rambunctious. They are a great family dog that bonds well with more than one person. As a breed they have been popular for centuries.

As their popularity has increased over the centuries, so has their value which, in turn, has influenced many people to begin puppy mills that don't provide conditions conducive to becoming good pets. Care must be taken to avoid irresponsible breeders when selecting a puppy. Finding a good breeding program is easy enough and can be accomplished with a little time on the internet or reading a breed specific publication.

In order to ensure the well being of your new pet, getting them from a responsible breeder and not from a puppy mill should be of paramount importance. Breeding operations that comply with licensing and government oversight provide companion animals that are not only healthier but also better socialized and with a more even temperament. The same principles should apply to any pet that is purchased and the same problems arise from all kinds of domesticated animals raised in unsanitary and horrifying conditions.

A good breeding operation will never be afraid to show the conditions that the animals were raised in, nor will they deny you the opportunity to see the parent animals. Both of these things should be inspected to ensure that you're getting a healthy animal that was not only raised in the proper habitat but also was weaned at the right time and fed the correct diet. They should also be expected to find out if you would be a suitable owner.

As far as their origins as a pet, finding royal standard poodle breeders that comply with a healthy breeding program is the best option. Pet store animals are often from puppy mills or irresponsible breeders and should be avoided at all costs. Once made available, after weaning them from their mother, poodle puppies can be a welcome addition to any home.
